Welcome to

counciltaxinfo.gov.uk

This site is in development.

The counciltaxinfo site is being developed to help you understand how council tax works in England. Because a number of central and local government organisations are involved in council tax, we understand how easy it is to become confused over who is responsible for what, and who you need to speak to on specific issues. counciltaxinfo sets out to deliver a one stop information resource to make things easier for you.

This site is a joint initiative by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) and the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). Both organisations are committed to delivering more information to council taxpayers, in a clear and understandable format.

Initially we are providing links to useful websites:

The VOA is responsible for placing properties into the appropriate band for council tax.

The DCLG is responsible for the policy and legislation on council tax, but does not set the amount you pay.

The local council to which you have to pay your council tax is called the billing authority.
Your billing authority will give you information about how much the council tax is in your area and what discounts and exemptions are available.
You can find the website address of your billing authority from http://www.direct.gov.uk/
If you are unsure of your billing authority but know your postcode,
you can get the name of your local billing authority from the VOA website.

The Valuation Tribunal Service operates an appeal service in relation to council tax bands and liability.
